Zojo-ji Temple

Zojo-ji Temple

A Buddhist temple located in the popular Minato ward of Tokyo which is steeped in history. The temple was founded in the present location in 1590, but it is said that its origins go as far back as 1393. It was favoured by the Shogunate Tokugawa Clan as their temple to visit during their rule in Tokyo. 6 of the Tokugawa family are actually buried here, so if you love Samurai history this is a must visit during your Tokyo trip!

Located just in front of iconic Tokyo Tower, visitors can snap some amazing photos of the old and new structures side by side. It is known for its colourful ’Jizo’ statues which line the grounds outside. Inside the temple’s main halls you can watch Buddhist Monks chanting during their services, marvel at the temple’s treasures, and try your hand at Buddhist Sutra copying.

The temple is free to enter and explore, but you must pay an additional fee if you want to visit the Temple’s Treasure House Museum or the Mausoleum of the 6 Tokugawa Shogunate. Please be aware that both of these are closed on Tuesdays, so plan ahead of time if you want to visit them both!

The temple is located within Shiba Park, so if you want to enjoy a longer walk in nature we recommend exploring the park as well. On the grounds of the temple, there is also a small tearoom and cafe selling traditional Japanese sweets and matcha, as well as other snacks and drinks.
