Lying around 1.5 hours to the south-east of Furano Ski Resort, Tomamu is a medium-sized resort with excellent snow and facilities well-suited to families. Operated by the Hoshino Resorts group, Tomamu is a ‘resort’ in every sense of the word. Large hotel towers including high-end restaurants and indoor 50 metre wave pool reflect the fact that Tomamu isn’t just about the snow, and is an all-year-round resort catering to a high-end crowd. This will appeal to some while turn others off but shouldn’t distract from the fat that Hoshino Resorts Tomamu is another Hokkaido resort blessed with amazing powder.
WHERE TO STAY IN TOMAMU?
Hoshino Resorts Tomamu is another resort operated by a hotel group targeting the high-end market. Tomamu isn’t just a ski resort, it’s an all-round resort with facilities including a 50-metre wave pool, fine dining restaurants and high-end accommodation. While the resort itself is very good and receives excellent snow, Tomamu is very much designed for the market wanting a full ‘resort’ experience with everything revolving around two twin tower hotels – RISONARE Hotel and The Tower hotel. Both offer high-end and spacious Western-style rooms and boast multiple restaurants. The hotels also offer ski in/out convenience and full concierge services. Club Med Tomamu is another option for visitors really wanting a full resort experience with all of these hotels offering all-inclusive packages covering all aspects of your stay.
Away from these hotels you find a small number of lodges and guesthouses offering much more local character and lower prices with little in the way of restaurants and nightlife. Tomamu really is setup for visitors wanting a full resort experience. If that’s you, then Tomamu offers just that in conjunction with fantastic skiing and snowboarding. NISEKO UNITED SKI RESORT
Operating under the banner of ‘Niseko United’, Hokkaido’s best-known resort is in fact four connected resorts covered by an all-mountain pass. Accommodation is available in and around each of the four resorts with Niseko Grand Hirafu and Niseko Village having the greatest range of options, followed by Niseko Annupuri and Niseko Hanazono. Niseko is without doubt Japan’s most international and high-end ski resort, attracting visitors from all over the world. RUSUTSU SKI RESORT
Rusutsu Ski Resort is the largest stand-alone resort in Hokkaido. Less-crowded than Niseko, Rusutsu also caters to the high-end market with large hotels including Rusutsu Resort Hotel, The Vale Rusutsu and Westin Rusutsu resort offering luxury accommodation and good services for families. KIRORO SKI RESORT
Kiroro Ski Resort is notably less-developed than Rusutsu, but still offers some excellent large hotels including The Sheraton Hokkaido Kiroro Resort, The Kiroro Tribute Hotel and Yu Kiroro. Much like Rusutsu, most of Kiroro’s nightlife and dining is located within these hotels. Away from these hotels Kiroro doesn’t offer much other accommodation or nightlife. FURANO SKI RESORT
Highly-rated Furano Ski Resort is operated by the Prince Hotels group, with the resort featuring two large Prince Hotels. Both Prince Hotels offer a huge number of rooms, multiple restaurants, shops and in-house services including rental, ski schools and day-care.
