Nagoya is located almost exactly halfway between Tokyo and Osaka. With Ise Bay to the south, the Hida Highlands to the North, and easy access to the many castle towns along the Nakasendo and Tokaido roads to the east and west, Nagoya makes for a great base offering easy access to a wide range of day trips. And while many international visitors pass through Nagoya en route to Tokyo, Kyoto, Osaka, and beyond without thinking to stop—those who do will find Nagoya to be the ideal location for travelers who wish to avoid the crowds and discover the hidden charms of Japan for themselves.
WHERE TO STAY WHEN VISITING NAGOYA?
Nagoya is Japan’s fourth largest city and as such, there is no shortage of accommodation to choose from. In this section we provide information about accommodation in the following areas:
NAGOYA STATION / NAKAMURA AREA – SAKAE STATION / NISHIKI AREA – CHUBU CENTRAIR AIRPORT AREA
The area immediately around Nagoya Station has many large hotels—ranging from high-end to budget—including some inside the station itself. Located a short subway ride away from Nagoya station, the Sakae area of Nagoya is the city’s main shopping and entertainment district. As such the area has many great options for travelers looking to enjoy the city’s fine dining or nightlife. For travelers looking for a more traditional stay, Nagoya and the surrounding areas also have many traditional ‘ryokan’ to choose from. While travelers with early or late flights out of Chubu Centrair might consider staying around the airport.
NAGOYA STATION / NAKAMURA AREA
Nagoya Station is a stop on the Tokaido Shinkansen line running from Tokyo to Kyoto and Osaka along with multiple express lines running to other cities and regions. As such, it’s very convenient to choose a hotel in or nearby the station, saving you the trouble of having to carry your luggage while having easy access to the shinkansen and other train services. The station sits within the Nakamura Ward where you’ll find many large hotels ranging from high-end to budget, with several hotel franchises having a presence. Most hotels offer Western-style rooms and amenities with many of the larger hotels having English-speaking staff. For listings, see our ‘Nagoya Station / Nakamura Area’ hotel page.
SAKAE STATION / NISHIKI AREA
Around 2.5 kilometers to the east of Nagoya Station, the area around Sakae Station and nearby Nishiki District also offer plenty of choice when it comes to accommodations. Most accommodations are, again, large, Western-style hotels with many mid-range and budget options available. Though a fraction less convenient than staying around Nagoya Station, the Sakae district is still easily accessible while putting you within walking distance of many of the city’s main attractions and popular shopping centers. For accommodation listings, see our ‘Sakae Station / Nishiki Area’ hotel page.
CHUBU AIRPORT AREA
Chubu Centrair International Airport sits 50KM to the south of central Nagoya City, accessible using the μ Sky Limited Express or Limited Express Meitetsu train services. The airport is on a man-made island in Ise Bay and offers a couple of hotels in the airport itself with more options just over the bridge on the mainland. As you’d expect, accommodation around the airport comes in the form of business hotels—a good option if you have an early or late flight. For listings, see our ‘Chubu Centrair International Airport Area’ page.
