Gero Onsen is a popular hot spring town located approximately halfway between Nagoya and Takayama. Set in a beautiful area of Gifu Prefecture, Gero is readily accessible using the Limited Express ‘Hida’ service and home to many hotels and guesthouses. The two is effectively split in two by the river, with the greatest concentration of guesthouses and the town centre on the opposite side of the river to the train station. Accommodation in this area is dominated by large hotels, popular with tour groups and families. If you’re looking for something a little quieter and more traditional, search for ‘ryokan’ (traditional guesthouses) located outside the town centre – often set in among beautiful forests and by the river.
