Housed in a 170-year old traditional mansion, Hotarutei prides itself of delivering an outstanding food experience. Serving traditional Japanese cuisine including warming ‘nabe’ hotpot, tempura, wagyu beef along with sushi and sashimi sets, guests can indulge in a luxurious ‘kaiseki’ (traditional multi course) meal.

Only a few minutes walk from the trailhead leading to the famous Jigokudani Snow Monkey Park, Hotarutei Villas is a new and welcome addition to Kanbayashi Onsen. Boasting two luxury villas, each with their own private onsen bath and two bedrooms included, Hotarutei Villas is a great option for families or friend groups traveling together and looking to have their own space. Beyond just the villas, there is also the main hall - a 180 year renovated farmhouse - which contains a Japanese restaurant and a special lounge area for villa guests to use freely.
The ski fields of Shiga Kogen, one of the sites of the 1998 Nagano Olympics, are also only a 20-30 minute drive or bus ride away, allowing villa guests to make skiing based day trips with ease. Access from Nagano City, itself easily accessible from Tokyo by bullet train, is also simple by either car, bur, or train.

WHERE IS HOTARUTEI VILLAS?
Hotarutei Villas is located around 35KM / 50-minutes to the north-east of central Nagano City. Serving as a great base for a trip to either the Monkey Park or Shiga Kogen, Hotarutei Villas welcomes guests year round. When heading to the villas using public transport, it will be easiest to do so from Nagano Station, from where an express bus runs directly to the Snow Monkey Park Bus Stop. Alternatively, you can take the Nagano Dentetsu railway to Yudanaka Station – the nearest train station to the restaurant and Monkey Park – and from there, take a local bus to the Snow Monkey Park Bus Stop. Both options take around 50 to 55-minutes in total to reach the hotel. From the bus stop, it is only a very short walk up the hill in the direction of the Monkey Park before you will arrive at Hotarutei Villas. The Villas are located in the small hot spring village of Kanbayashi Onsen, which itself is located in the wider region of Yamanouchi – a region including the park, multiple hot spring villages, Shiga Kogen Ski Resort, the smaller ski resorts of Kita-Shiga Kogen and Joshinetsu Kogen National Park.
MEALS AND CUISINE
One of the most important ways accommodations in Japan distinguish themselves from the competition is through the tastiness of their cuisine, and Hotarutei Villas is putting its best foot forward. With Dinner and Breakfast included in the usual stay plan, and lunch also available at the main hall, no one will need go hungry during their stay.
The dishes prepared for dinner are seasonal and will change throughout the year; however they will generally bear resemblance to the course meal pictured above. With a large variety of options on many different plates, you will be able to try locally produced vegetables, meats and fish prepared with Japanese flavorings, sushi, and soup, amongst others. For guests with any allergies or dietary restrictions, please inform Hotarutei when you book your stay and the kitchen will do their best to accommodate your request.
For breakfast, you will be offered the choice of a Japanese or Western style meal. If you are staying multiple days, you will of course be able to change it up each day to try something different! Pictured above is an example of the Japanese breakfast, composed of rice paired with many varieties of vegetables, fruits, and unique Japanese items such as soba noodles and sweet beans.
The Western Breakfast offers familiar foods such as toasted bread, bacon, sausages and a light salad. You will be all set to enjoy this Japanese take on these classic breakfast items if you so choose. There is no need to feel pressured to always pick the Japanese option just because you are in Japan - Japan prides itself on its preparation of dishes from around the world!
Meals will be enjoyed in the main hall, and private rooms are also available upon request if not booked out.
AMENITIES AT HOTARUTEI VILLAS
Each of the two villas at Hotarutei Villas comes equipped with many amenities for its guests, and there are further amenities offered in the main hall as well.
As pictured above, each villa has its own private onsen bath for you to use at your own leisure. Using real, natural spring waters heated up through volcanic activity, a number of benefits for your skin and overall health are possible by just relaxing in the hot waters and enjoying the sounds of the wind through the trees.
A kitchenette is also attached to each villa, allowing for some freedom in your food preparation, and the ability to enjoy a snack or a few drinks with your compatriots during your trip. While small, you will have everything you need including a fridge, water heater, IH Burner, and cooking utensils/cutlery.
A lounge in the main hall has also been prepared for overnight guests, along with the option to order desserts, coffee, local sake, and more. Here you can really see the age of the building in its spectacular craftsmanship and large wooden beams, laying just as they did 180 years ago when first built. Feel free to relax here and wind down before returning to your villa, or to enjoy a quick drink and a snack before heading to your next destination.
