Kamikochi Area
Kamikochi is one the highlights of visiting Nagano, one that leaves a lasting impression on visitors. This stunning region is a natural basin nestled within the Chubu Sangaku National Park which preserves are near pristine natural environment intersected by hiking paths and without the interruption of private vehicles (which are prohibited). Only open to the public from mid-April to mid-November due to heavy snow in winter, the region includes a range of accommodation options from camping to high-end hotels.
In total, there are approximately 20 options for accommodation in Kamikochi however due to popularity, finding accommodation during the high season can be difficult. Booking early is highly recommended and while popularity also equates to high prices, the experience of stargazing at night or your walks through this gorgeous landscape will be a highlight of your visit to Japan. At its most popular during the summer holidays in August and then in September and October due to the valley’s spectacular autumn colours, accommodation can be hard to come by especially for travellers on a budget. If that’s the case, consider staying in nearby Hirayu Onsen – part of the wider Okuhida Onsen region – where you’ll find a good range of accommodation suiting all budgets and within easy reach of Kamikochi
