Located within reach of the Kumano Grand Shrines, Katsuura Onsen is a beautiful and tranquil area known of its idyllic ‘onsen’ (hot springs). Once a fishing port, the area is now home to an array of traditional guesthouses and hotels, many with outdoor baths allowing guests to take in the surrounding landscape while they soak. Being on the coast, the area is also home to a number of hidden onsen that can only be reached by boat. Katsuura Onsen can be accessed via Kii-Katsuura Station, from where buses run to Kumano Nachi Taisha and the pilgrimage trails of the Kumano Kodo.
