Kumano Hongu Taisha is one of three shrines making-up the ‘Kumano Sanzan’ or Kumano Grand Shrines. As such, it is one of the primary destinations for visitors walking the pilgrimage trails of Kumano Kodo. The area around Kumano Hongu is home to guesthouses and hotels, providing accommodation to pilgrims as they walk the trails along with visitors who want to explore the shrines and perhaps undertake a short walk themselves.
