Okinawa: Kume Island
One of the many islands making-up the ‘Okinawa Shoto’ grouping, Kume Island is located around 90 kilometres to the west Okinawa Honto. Much smaller than the main island of Okinawa Honto, Kume or ‘Kumejima’ is known for its beautiful and less developed beaches including its most famous attraction, the 7-kilometre sandbar Hatenohama Beach. Kume is known for its diving and snorkelling and laid-back pace – a good option for visitors not wanting to travel to far from the main island but seeking a less-developed destination.
Kume provides visitors with plenty of accommodation options including beachside resorts and hotels, mid-range guesthouses and basic ‘minshuku’ lodges. Most accommodation is located on the eastern side of the island with ore on the western side of the island, nearby the ferry terminal and Kume’s small airport.
