Nagasaki: Unzen Onsen Area
Sitting to the east of Nagasaki City, Unzen Onsen is a popular hot spring town on the flanks of Mount Unzen – one of Japan’s most active volcanoes. While that might sound alarming to some travellers, all of that volcanic activity blesses the area with huge amount of natural thermal water, which feeds the bathhouses of Unzen Onsen. There are multiple hotels and guesthouses in Unzen, including high-end options that offer some of the best accommodation in Kyushu with views of the dramatic volcanic fields surrounding the town. The fields are dissected by paved trails that forge a safe route past steam vents, mud pools, and bubbling hot springs while staying in Unzen Onsen puts you within easy reach of Unzen-Amakusa National Park. A hugely popular hiking and driving destination, visiting the area is best-suited to visitors driving themselves.
Mt. Unzen is an active volcano and your personal safety should be your first priority. The Japan Meteorological Agency provides real-time advice and warnings for the entire country. Prior to visiting Unzen, we recommend checking the JMA website.
