Shikoku: Takamatsu City Area
Takamatsu is the largest city in Kagawa Prefecture and the nearest port on Shikoku, to Japan’s main island of Honshu. Ferry services run to and from Takamatsu to Honshu and other destinations, while the Great Seto Bridge connects Shikoku to Honshu with rail services that cross the bridge running onto Takamatsu Station. As such, most international visitors travel to and from Shikoku via Takamatsu, from where destinations around the island can be accessed by train or alternatively, by renting a car and driving yourself.
The city offers plenty of choice when it comes to accommodation, which is mostly located in the area between Takamatsu Station and Kawaramachi Station, and nearby the port area. Options include mid-size to large Western-style hotels including business hotels, self-contained accommodation and smaller guesthouses. Prices are typically reasonable and notably cheaper than the nearby islands of Naoshima, Teshima and Shodoshima, especially in summer peak season. All three can be reached using ferry services to and from Takamatsu, making staying in the city a great option when accommodation on the islands is booked-out or at its most expensive in August.
