Yokohama: Chinatown / Motomachi Area
Yokohama’s Chinatown is the largest such district of any city in Japan and as such, ranks among the city’s most popular destinations. The area boasts hundreds of restaurants and shops with the cuisine and vibrant ambience of the district being the main attraction. In the area in and around Chinatown, you’ll also find plenty of accommodation options, most of which are mid-range hotels to budget lodges with a couple of notable high-end options including Hotel New Grand and Hyatt Regency located nearby Yamashita Park and looking toward Tokyo Bay.
Located to the south of Chinatown district, Motomachi and Yamate were popular with foreigners who resided in the city after Japan re-opened to the world during the Meiji Restoration. While most of the original buildings no longer remain, the main shopping street retains a distinctly Western atmosphere and offers visitors a range of shops, restaurants, cafes and a handful of accommodation options.
Yokohama has many other attractions of interest for international visitors. Yokohama is vibrant and boasts numerous stores and restaurants, with Chinatown being particularly colourful and busy in February for Chinese New Year. Chinatown boasts over 600 shops, restaurants and vendors selling street food. While you’re there, be sure to check out Kanteibyo Temple. Sankei-en garden is one Japan’s most famous while the popular neighbourhood of Minato Marai 21 and Big Wharf / Osanbashi Pier highlight the city’s modern and energetic character. Yokohama’s famous red brick warehouse is also worth a visit, with many seasonal events being held throughout the year. If you’re in Japan during December and looking for a place to get into the Christmas spirit, the Warehouse hosts one of the largest and best Christmas markets around the Tokyo area!
The station that services the Chinatown area is Motomachi-Chukagai station. It is a gateway to the vibrant Chinatown and is a busy station due to the high number of visitors. It is a fully underground station and modern. The station is served by the Minatomirai Line which directly connects to the Tokyu Toyoko Line.
