Whether you’re hiking along the picturesque trails or simply taking in the panoramic views, this immersive tour offers a perfect opportunity to connect with the natural beauty of Kamikochi.

KAMIKOCHI & MATSUMOTO CASTLE TOUR FROM NAGANO & MATSUMOTO / April to November

Kamikochi sits in the middle of the mountains and is accessible from the west from Takayama and also from the east. The eastern route comes form Matsumoto, another city with a long and storied history. This tour starts from Matsumoto as you see the city's most impressive site, Matsumoto Castle. It is one of Japan's 12 original castles and is famous for its black color, wooden interior and interesting stories. You will also get a chance to walk along the Kaeru Michi or Frog Street that has over 50 shops, restaurants and cafes that sell many different products that may pique your interest. After a morning full of history culture and tradition, the afternoon will take you to see the relaxing and pristine environment of Kamikochi. Enjoy a walk along a clear mountain river as you drink in the stunning mountains around you. Some of the bridges and walkways are are unique and deepen the feeling of being on a true adventure.

After the tour concludes at Matsumoto Station, we recommend taking the Limited Express train 'Azusa' to the Shimo-Suwa area, a charming historic town nestled along the shores of Lake Suwa. Day 5 NAGANO, SHIMO-SUWA

On the first day, you will have explored the famous Magome - Tsumago section of the Nakasendo Trail, renowned for its scenic beauty and historical significance. This time, however, you will venture into a lesser-known and more challenging section of the Nakasendo. Known as the toughest part of the entire trail, this rugged path takes you through remote, untouched landscapes, offering a truly immersive experience of the trail’s original, more arduous conditions. As you walk through dense forests, climb steep passes, and follow ancient paths, you’ll gain a deeper appreciation for the endurance required by past travelers and the remarkable natural beauty that surrounds this hidden gem of the Nakasendo.

On this tour, you will begin by exploring Shimosuwa-juku in the morning, where you will learn about its historical background and its role as a post town along the Nakasendo. Afterward, you will embark on a 2.5 hour hike over the Wada Pass, experiencing firsthand the challenging terrain that once tested travelers on this historic route.

Once getting back to the Shimo-suwa post town you will be welcomed with the exclusive hospitality offered by the current head of the Iwanami family, the esteemed owners of the historic Honjin. Japanese locals especially love Kamakura and Enoshima due to its close proximity to the sea!
