Situated halfway between Tokyo and Osaka and surrounded by fertile plains, mountains, rivers, and the sea, it’s no surprise that Nagoya has earned the title of “The Heart of Japan.” Historically a hub for samurai, craftsmen, and later, wealthy merchants and visionary industrial leaders, Nagoya has evolved into one of Japan’s largest cities. Today, it stands as a powerhouse of innovation and industry. With its diverse food scene, easy access to nature, and vibrant nightlife, Nagoya is the perfect base for exploring Japan or venturing into the scenic mountainous regions of Central Japan.
However, for those with only a short timeframe to explore this underrated city, designing an itinerary to make sure you see the city's highlights can be a struggle. Thankfully, we've designed an action-packed, full day that will not only give you a taste of the wonderful flavors of the region and introduce you to some of the most notable landmarks in the city, but also provide you with the confidence to go out and explore more of Nagoya on your own.
Morning: Enjoy the City's Coffee Culture & Explore Lively Fish Markets

Start off your day with a stroll through the Yanagibashi Central Fish Market. At this bustling market, you’ll witness the local fishmongers at work—slicing giant tuna and negotiating with chefs and restaurateurs. The market, known as the “Pantry of Central Japan,” is home to around 130 shops offering fresh ingredients from Ise Bay and surrounding farms. You’ll have a chance to sample local seafood and soak in the energetic atmosphere of this historic market.

Next, we recommend heading to the Endonji Shopping District, a charming, covered, shopping street that is home to some of Nagoya’s oldest cafes. The district is the perfect place to dive into the city’s breakfast culture, known as “morning service.” Enjoy a traditional “morning set” with your choice of beverage and toast—don’t miss the ogura toast, a local specialty of red bean paste on freshly toasted buttered bread.
Midday: Exploring Nagoya Castle & Historic Landmarks

Recharged by your morning coffee, take a short walk to Nagoya Castle, one of Japan’s most famous landmarks. As you explore the castle grounds, be sure to enter Honmaru Palace, the highlight of Nagoya Castle, where you can marvel at the golden rooms and intricate artwork that have earned the palace the designation of a National Treasure.
Following the castle tour, we recommend stopping by Kinshachi Yokocho—a charming area near the castle that is home to many eateries boasting the regions most famous foods. Be sure to try the Tebasaki, Nagoya’s signature deep-fried chicken wings. Coated in a sweet-salty sauce and sprinkled with sesame seeds and pepper, these wings are a local favorite.
Afternoon: Parks, Towers, and More Street Food

After a light lunch, take a stroll through the nearby Hisayaodori Park, a lively space where you can relax and enjoy the fresh air. Here, you’ll have some free time to explore Oasis 21, a futuristic shopping and entertainment complex, or ride the elevator to the top of Mirai Tower for stunning views of the city. If you’re craving something sweet, there are plenty of places to grab a quick gelato or refreshing drink to enjoy as you take in the sights.
Evening: Exploring Osu & Shopping

Leaving the Sakae area, we recommend taking the subway to the famous Osu Shopping District. The covered shopping arcade houses over 1200 businesses including electronic stores, thrift shops, restaurants, bars, shrines, a “sento” (indoor hot spring bath), and plenty of food stalls. The area hosts many events and festivals such as the “Osu Daido Chonin Festival” which celebrates the geisha courtesan parades of old, and the annual World Cosplay Summit. There is truly something for everyone in Osu and this "hodgepodge" atmosphere is one of the area’s most endearing qualities.
While in Osu, be sure to sample Miso-Katsu, a deep-fried pork cutlet served with a rich red miso sauce at the renowned Yabaton, where this iconic dish was born. This dish is quintessential to Nagoya’s food scene and a perfect way to wrap up your adventure.
Night: Relax in Your Hotel or Enjoy a Local Izakaya

As one of Japan’s largest cities, Nagoya has a variety of accommodations to suit every traveler’s preferences and budget.
The area immediately around Nagoya Station has many large hotels—ranging from high-end to budget—including some inside the station itself. Located a short subway ride away from Nagoya station, the Sakae area of Nagoya is the city’s main shopping and entertainment district. As such the area has many great options for travelers looking to enjoy the city’s fine dining or nightlife. For travelers looking for a more traditional stay, Nagoya and the surrounding areas also have many traditional ‘ryokan’ to choose from.
