It is the world’s most populated city and metropolitan area with an estimated 41 million people living in the Tokyo and Greater Tokyo area as of 2024. 1 / SEE TOKYO FROM ABOVE / all year round

Tokyo-tower

Tokyo is a vast and sprawling metropolis, it stretches as far as the eye can see! To truly understand and appreciate the sheer scale of the city, we recommend visiting one of the many observatories the city offers. The city is home to the famous Tokyo Tower, Tokyo Skytree and the newest addition, Shibuya Sky! All provide visitors with great panoramic views of Tokyo. Tokyo Skytree and Shibuya Sky are quite modern and plush, but if you want that classic, retro experience, we suggest Tokyo Tower!

If you’re not so keen on great heights, but still want a chance to see the city from above, we recommend checking out lesser known but equally great viewing decks! There is the Asakusa Tourist Centre which gives great views of Asakusa and the Sumida skyline, Shibuya Hikarie which makes for a fantastic place to see Shibuya crossing from afar, and Carrot Tower in Sangenchaya! If you’re really lucky with the weather, you can see Mount Fuji from all of the observatories mentioned!

Join our Tokyo Highlights tour to experience Tokyo Tower as well as many other great attractions Tokyo has to offer!

2 / ESCAPE TO THE GREEN HAVENS OF THE CITY / all year round

Kagurazaka-Koshikawa-gardens

For those who want a break from the skyscrapers and bright lights, Tokyo is home to a number of wonderful parks and gardens each offering their own unique features and history. When we think of Tokyo, we automatically think modern, which can easily lead to the parks and gardens being overlooked. There are the more casual, Westernised parks like Yoyogi and Hibiya. There are also the historic and traditional gardens of Shinjuku Gyoen Garden, Hamarikyu Gardens and Koishikawa Gardens and Teahouse which have traditional Japanese features such as bridges, rock gardens and tea houses where you can enjoy matcha and sweets after your relaxing walk!

Join our ‘Tokyo Highlights’ tour, our ‘Best of Both’ tour or our ‘Hotspots and Hidden Gems’ tour to experience some of these wonderful slices of paradise.

3 / VISIT THE MANY SHRINES AND TEMPLES / all year round

Asakusa-Sensoji-temple

Tokyo may be known for its modern architecture, but it still has a plethora of Shinto shrines and Buddhist temples peppered around the city that are well worth your time! Some of Japan’s most famous shrines are in Tokyo, such as Sensoji Temple and Nakamise Dori in Asakusa, or Meiji Jingu Shrine in Shibuya! If you’re a fan of lesser known gems, then venturing out to the ‘Yanesen’ old Tokyo area or even taking time to explore the cultural hub of Ueno Park will not disappoint those wanting to delve into this side of Tokyo! Whilst at Shrines and Temples, we highly recommend picking up an ‘omamori’ or ‘omikuji’ which are paper fortunes and lucky charms!

Shibuya-Meiji-Jingu

Join any of our Tokyo tours for the chance to visit some of these religious sites and amazing structures!

4 / MATCHA, TRADITIONAL SWEETS and TEA CEREMONY / all year round

Tokyo-Hamarikyu

Enjoying Matcha and Wagashi (Japanese sweets) are a big part of Japanese traditional culture. Like the British enjoy a cup of tea and scones, Matcha and Wagashi is the Japanese equivalent!

We highly recommend you try this at least once on your trip to Japan, and Tokyo offers a wide range of venues and tea houses that can offer this experience. Most of the Traditional Japanese gardens will have tea houses on site such as Koishikawa Gardens and Teahouse and Hamarikyu Gardens, where you can buy a cup of matcha and a piece of Wagashi which you can enjoy at your own pace whilst enjoying views of the garden! If you want a more formal experience, then we recommend booking a tea ceremony experience where a tea teacher will wear a kimono, prepare your matcha and Wagashi in front of you.

Yanaka

Join our ‘Yanasen’ Old Tokyo tour or our ‘Hot spots and Hidden Gems’ tour to get the chance to try either a tea ceremony or teahouse in a Japanese garden!

6 / IZAKAYA CULTURE / all year round

Following on from point 5, if you’re a foodie lover and want to experience how the locals eat and drink, then exploring Izakaya is a great way to do this. Izakaya can be likened to the British pub! Traditional food and drinks are served, often in the style of grilled foods and side plates such as cooked fish, Yakitori, pickles, omelettes and sushi! You will often find many locals and office workers drinking and eating after work letting their hair down! They can be some of the most affordable places to eat and drink as well, but the quality is still of a high standard. So if you’re travelling on a budget but want authentic experiences, Izakaya are great to visit.

There are many independent and chain Izakaya throughout Tokyo! Both are great fun to try! One of the most popular and more modern chain of Izakaya are Torikizoku famed for their Yakitori or grilled meat skewers! Washed down with a few beers or ‘Lemon Sours’ and this is a cheap but tasty night out!

If you want the chance to experience an Izakaya on your trip, then join our ’Asakusa’ tour where we spend lunch eating at a local Izakaya!

7 / SAMPLE THE NATIONAL DRINK /  all year round

A sweet, rice based drink that is delicious and refreshing. There are many fantastic bars and Izakaya in Tokyo where you can sample many types of drinks ranging in price based in their quality.
