It is the world’s most populated city and metropolitan area with an estimated 41 million people living in the Tokyo and Greater Tokyo area as of 2024. Narita Airport sits around 65KM to the east of Tokyo – serivced by the Narita Express (NEX) and Keisei Skyliner running to central Tokyo – and Haneda Airport only 20KM to the south on Tokyo Station and connected to the central city by Tokyo Monorail and Keikyu Line.

1 / SEE TOKYO FROM ABOVE / all year round
Tokyo is a vast and sprawling metropolis, it stretches as far as the eye can see! To truly understand and appreciate the sheer scale of the city, we recommend visiting one of the many observatories the city offers. The city is home to the famous Tokyo Tower, Tokyo Skytree and the newest addition, Shibuya Sky! All provide visitors with great panoramic views of Tokyo. Tokyo Skytree and Shibuya Sky are quite modern and plush, but if you want that classic, retro experience, we suggest Tokyo Tower!
If you’re not so keen on great heights, but still want a chance to see the city from above, we recommend checking out lesser known but equally great viewing decks! There is the Asakusa Tourist Centre which gives great views of Asakusa and the Sumida skyline, Shibuya Hikarie which makes for a fantastic place to see Shibuya crossing from afar, and Carrot Tower in Sangenchaya! If you’re really lucky with the weather, you can see Mount Fuji from all of the observatories mentioned!

There are also the historic and traditional gardens of Shinjuku Gyoen Garden, Hamarikyu Gardens and Koishikawa Gardens and Teahouse which have traditional Japanese features such as bridges, rock gardens and tea houses where you can enjoy matcha and sweets after your relaxing walk!

Enjoying Matcha and Wagashi (Japanese sweets) are a big part of Japanese traditional culture. Like the British enjoy a cup of tea and scones, Matcha and Wagashi is the Japanese equivalent!
We highly recommend you try this at least once on your trip to Japan, and Tokyo offers a wide range of venues and tea houses that can offer this experience. Most of the Traditional Japanese gardens will have tea houses on site such as Koishikawa Gardens and Teahouse and Hamarikyu Gardens, where you can buy a cup of matcha and a piece of Wagashi which you can enjoy at your own pace whilst enjoying views of the garden! If you want a more formal experience, then we recommend booking a tea ceremony experience where a tea teacher will wear a kimono, prepare your matcha and Wagashi in front of you.

Following on from point 5, if you’re a foodie lover and want to experience how the locals eat and drink, then exploring Izakaya is a great way to do this. Izakaya can be likened to the British pub! Traditional food and drinks are served, often in the style of grilled foods and side plates such as cooked fish, Yakitori, pickles, omelettes and sushi! You will often find many locals and office workers drinking and eating after work letting their hair down! They can be some of the most affordable places to eat and drink as well, but the quality is still of a high standard.
